THE LIFE CAFE & JONATHAN LARSON LEGACY

Jonathan Larson spent time at LIFE CAFE when he was writing RENT. To what degree the Cafe and its community of regulars provided him with inspiration we can only speculate. But, there is no doubt that he was part of the LIFE CAFE scene and at the very center of the community he wrote about.

The timeless themes of universal love, life, art and the belief in one's dreams are the foundation of RENT and have always been at the heart of Life. Perhaps that was the reason why he immortalized LIFE CAFE in his musical.

So to celebrate the ongoing legacy and connection with RENT and the East Village, we’ve assembled a special exhibition, illustrating what café life and the neighborhood was like at the time he drew his inspiration.

Now we invite you to be part of that ongoing heritage. Come and make your mark; leave a message in our commemorative journals, sit on the Jonathan Larson bench and view the Life History Wall above it. And whilst you’re here enjoy the “Original East Village Experience”, have a chat with a friendly patron and at the same time enjoy our “delicious staff and friendly food”!

The Producers of RENT and Life Cafe are co-sponsoring a RENT tickets sweepstakes. So, while your at Life Cafe for your pilgrimage, from March 1 through March 31, 2008, fill out an official entry slip with your name and email or mailing address and drop it in the entry box. The winner will receive a voucher for two tickets to see the Broadway production before April 27th. The lucky winner's name will be drawn on April 1st. So come on by!
